The skills we need:

We aim to share skills and responsibilities equally, and so don't tend to stick to set roles. If you are a builder you will not only build, if you are a chef you will not only cook. We aim to make sure we are all comfortable with the work we are doing and are able to work in a variety of different roles in the areas that interest us. The skills we are looking for include the below list however if you’re enthusiastic, flexible, and willing to learn, we’d be happy to meet you.

  • Administration and Bookkeeping Skills

  • Experience with Social Work

  • Language skills: especially Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, Kurdish, French & Greek.

  • Building experience

  • An understanding of European asylum law

  • IT skills and social media experience

  • An understanding of food and nutrition

  • Cooking skills

  • An ability to facilitate and make things happen!

 What we ask from you

  • Whether you already live in Athens, or are travelling to Athens specifically to volunteer with us, we request a minimum commitment of 4 weeks, although we always prefer to have people joining us for longer. We find that this adds to the sense of community building and supports the running of the centre. KAST volunteers receive an in-depth training and so we ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months or 4 months if you can interpret/translate.

  • An open mind and enthusiasm.

  • Flexibility, because we respond to needs as they occur. Our working week is seldom the same.

  • A willingness to join our team and to take on some responsibility within the working groups in which you are involved.

What we can provide for you and what you can expect

Khora is a vibrant community of volunteers and this is your chance to be a part of it. There are skill sharing and learning opportunities and we’ll help guide and support you during your time here. You can read more about us here.

After your induction (see below), you’ll have the opportunity to sign up to our weekly schedule for the projects you’d like to volunteer with.

Inductions

We require all volunteers to attend an induction before they begin volunteering with Khora. We usually hold inductions twice a week. This is an informal meeting to get to know each other, learn about Khora, how we are organized and how we make decisons. You will learn about the various projects and how you can begin to volunteer with us. It’s also a chance to ask questions. At the end of the induction you will have the opportunity to join various working groups and decide which shifts best fit your schedule.
